Red blood cells are 'biconcave' in shape - meaning they are like a doughnut with a solid middle. This shape gives them both a large surface area and the ability to expand and shrink in volume without undue damage. They are filled with millions of molecules of a red protein, called haemoglobin, that allows the transport of oxygen molecules.
